About Us

Dear Scouts and Parents,

Welcome to Troop 840! We are honored to have you visit our web site and we invite you to visit our Troop anytime. We meet on Tuesdays from 7:00 to 8:15 PM at Church of the Apostles at 322 S. MacArthur Blvd., Coppell, TX 75019.

Our goal at Troop 840 is to deliver the promise of Scouting: Adventure, Learning, Challenge, and Responsibility. The first part of our promise is the great outdoors. We go camping every month and we go to summer camp each year. Summer camp is a perfect opportunity to focus on mastering your Scout Skills on the Trail to First Class. Usually, we also have a High Adventure activity for our Scouts 14 and older, like Philmont Scout Camp in New Mexico, Northern Tier in Minnesota/Canada, Sea Base in Florida, or the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia; this is also the site of the National Jamboree every 4 years.

We have fun at Troop 840 and one of the fun things we do is have our Scout Buck Auction every May. Through out the year, Scouts earn “Scout Bucks” for various activities such as attendance at meetings and camp-outs, being in uniform, rank advancement and any other incentives deemed worthy of a reward. The boys accumulate these “Scout Bucks” which they then spend on camping equipment and other fun stuff. The auction is funded by our annual Chili Dinner at Austin Elementary School in December.

Please look over our great web site. You will see all of our outings listed and many of the photos from previous outings. You will also find other important information about our troop, including basic camp equipment and rules and procedures we live by. We always want to do what is best for the Scouts and stay within BSA policy. That includes Safe Scouting at all times.

A Quick History of Troop 840:

We were originally chartered in October of 1987.  The first Scoutmaster was Mr. Gary Brewer, followed by Mr. Bob McCarty, and Mr. Forrest Broom (who provided much of this information). Next came Mr. Terry Tyler until he moved away, then back to Mr. Forrest Broom, until finally Mr. Waid Davis for a number of years, followed by Mr. Chris Wilt, and then Mr. Terry Smith.  In January, 2013, Mr. Lawrence Paroski replaced Mr. Smith as Scoutmaster.  Webmaster's note: On December 1, 2014, Mr. Paroski passed away. He was temporarily succeeded by former Scoutmaster Mr. Chris Wilt. Mr. Wilt was then succeeded by Mr. Phillip Morse on March 1, 2015. Mr. Morse took a sabbatical as Scoutmaster beginning March 1, 2018, when his son was elected SPL. The former Knotmasters instructor, Mr. Craig Warner, and Mr. Morse swapped jobs for the spring/summer term in 2018, with Mr. Warner becoming the new Scoutmaster and Mr. Morse becoming the new lead instructor for Knotmasters. On March 1, 2021. Mr. Miller replaced Mr. Warner as Scoutmaster.  It is worth noting that the last five (5) former Scoutmasters are still active in Troop 840, which is a tribute to how much fun we have!

The Coppell Fire Department was the chartered organization in the beginning, but the Troop quickly outgrew the facility. By the fall of 1988 we started meeting at the middle school on Mockingbird (there was only one back then). We did that for about a year, until Sandy Lake Baptist Church took over our charter and provided our meeting place in the spring of 1989 till July 2007. From August 2007 to June 2017  we met at Valley Ranch Baptist Church in Coppell. In July 2017 we moved to Church of the Apostles on MacArthur Boulevard in Coppell. Church of the Apostles added a multipurpose space that we use as the main meeting room for Troop 840.

Today

Troop 840 is operated as a boy-led group. The Scouts make the agenda and take a leading role in organizing all camp outs and troop activities. The troop is more than 35 years old now and has been graced with more than 245 Eagle Scouts, with several more on the way.

We currently run a monthly outdoor program consisting of camping, backpacking and other activities. Our troop stresses boy leadership, responsibility, and an active program.

Where Do We MeetTroop 840 meets at Church of the Apostles,322 S. MacArthur Blvd., Coppell TX every Tuesday evening from 7:00pm to 8:15pm.

Before each meeting, at 6:30 pm, we have an optional (but highly-educational) program (started at Troop 840) called Knotmasters that is led by two of our Assistant Scoutmasters. In the Knotmasters program, Scouts/Scouters learn around 40 knots, lashings, splices, and rope-making, after which they proudly display the Knotmaster symbol on their Scout uniform belt.
